Carotenoids, like Lutein and Zeaxanthin, are important components of the macula. They are not synthesised by the body and must be obtained from the diet. These carotenoids are strong antioxidants and are selectively taken up by the macula where they absorb up to 90% of blue light.

After three weeks of treatment with saffron, IOP (eye pressure) & pain was significantly decreased to 10.9 ± 3.3 mmHg in the saffron group as compared to 13.5 ± 2.3 mmHg in the control group (p = 0.013). At four weeks, IOP was still significantly lower in the saffron group (10.6 ± 3.0 versus 13.8 ± 2.2 mmHg, p = 0.001).

Zeaxanthin and lutein act as powerful antioxidants in the retina and protect the eyes from harmful free radicals. The retina more particularly the macula is essential for vision.
